epidemic, endemic

epidemic, endemic
Endemic means "peculiar to a given country or people"; in medicine, the term is applied to a disease characteristic of, or confined to, a particular locality: "Malaria is endemic in certain warm, humid countries." Epidemic, much more often used, means "breaking out suddenly in such a way as to affect many individuals at the same time"; the term is used especially to refer to contagious diseases (See contagious): "In that year an epidemic of cholera broke out." See also pandemic.
